Australians love a ‘toastie’, so when Giovanni Pilu designed a menu for Taronga Zoo’s newest café - Taronga Piazza inspired by Giovanni Pilu - he did it with an Italian twist and created the free-range egg, pancetta & tomato panino.

As an ambassador for Lavazza, Giovanni is passionate about his coffee – so the mighty machine at the café delivers what might be one of the best coffees on the north shore.
Together they make a terrific breakfast – particularly on a sunny Saturday, when the Zoo is buzzing with people from all over the world.

There are also great biscotti and perfect muffins (maybe not Italian but a favourite of Giovanni’s), which are hot from the oven. The breakfast menu easily segues into brunch, which is pram central for the Mosman mums during the week.

Ladies that lunch enjoy the salt baked salmon salad with potato complemented by a glass of Italian Pinot Grigio under the shade of Italian market umbrellas, while afternoon tea is a café latte and an indulgent darkly rich Florentine or a tangy lemon tart made on-site.

The décor is simple and contemporary. Dark wood shelving offset by industrial white tiles showcase Brasserie Bread and a wide variety of house-baked cakes, biscuits and pies. Banquettes give a European flavour to the café and look over the beautiful Taronga bushland.

The outside terraces are numerous and the sound of birdsong, a wandering peacock and the tree kangaroo in a neighbouring gum make this a unique setting.

Service, like the food is very casual. If you eat-in, it’s served on white china, while for takeaway (very popular for families) it’s presented in environmentally friendly brown cardboard boxes.

Light and bright, this is a great destination for those visiting the Zoo or just wishing a unique casual spot to enjoy fresh food, wine and excellent coffee. The café is situated at the entrance to the Zoo (so no entry fee) and patrons get 90 minutes free parking.

As Taronga Piazza only operates during the day it’s also available for functions after 6pm.
