Compass Group Australia’s (CGA) reconciliation journey began 33 years ago, guided by a commitment to creating change through economic opportunities and empowerment. Over the years, CGA has developed strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, organisations and communities, establishing itself as a leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement. Central to this journey is CGA’s focus on building diversity in its supply chain by supporting First Nations businesses, spending over $15 million annually on goods and services from 84 First Nations suppliers.
One such collaboration began a decade ago with Djinda Produce, a high quality, fresh produce supplier to West Australian businesses. In 2015, Djinda first supplied fruit and vegetables to one of CGA’s Offshore and Remote sites, marking the start of a relationship built on mutual trust and shared values.
“I saw an opportunity to start Djinda when I looked around the market and thought it was the right time,” says Phil Matera, Founder and Director of Djinda Produce.

“CGA was one of the first to support us, and since then, we’ve grown from a team of four to over 20 full-time employees as a 100% Aboriginal-owned company.”
As the company continues to grow, now operating from a state-of-the-art facility in WA, it maintains a strong focus on mentoring and aspiring First Nations entrepreneurs. “We’re a fruit and vegetable wholesaler first and foremost,” Phil says. “But being First Nations-owned adds a layer of pride and responsibility. We hope our success inspires other Indigenous entrepreneurs.”

Underpinning CGA’s relationship with suppliers like Djinda is the shared commitment to quality, ensuring food safety is maintained from paddock to plate. With our commitment to fresh, seasonal food, CGA works closely with suppliers to ensure safe, high-quality produce meets the needs of our clients and chefs alike.
Looking back on the past decade, Phil expresses gratitude for this enduring ventures. “It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited for what the future holds,” Phil says.
Illuminating the path towards sustainable and ethical practices, CGA continues to be passionate about empowering First Nations businesses to thrive. Through working with and supporting like-minded suppliers like Djinda Produce, we’re excited for the next generation of First Nations entrepreneurs.
“Together with Compass Group Australia, we’re proving that strong collaborations lead to extraordinary outcomes.”
