Premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan alongside Minister for Education & Training, Sue Ellery, officially opened Compass Group’s training centre in Perth, The Academy.
Compass Group unveiled The Academy, a Perth training centre designed to train and upskill 3,500 existing and new employees in the next year. With an aim to transform and improve the WA FIFO workforce of tomorrow, training will have an emphasis on both skills and job-readiness as well as values, respectful behaviours and creating a diverse and inclusive experience that encourages more WA residents to consider employment in the WA resources sector.
Over the last 18 months, employment opportunities, opportunities to train and step into new roles and enter the mining industry have been instrumental in helping to keep WA mines, offshore facilities and resources projects operating throughout COVID, as WA has remained vigilant with border policies.
A first for the industry, the concept of The Academy was built on Compass Group’s desire to change and improve the resident experience in remote resource camps.
“Compass Group employs over 5,000 people in WA and this new training facility is helping to grow and build new opportunities for employment, upskill and train WA citizens and improve their lives in the long-term,” shares Compass Group Australia’s Managing Director, Shelley Roberts. “People working remotely in the resources sector deserve to live well, and we see that we can play a role in that through creating a diverse and inclusive residential experience that supports new entrants to the workforce to feel at home, whether it’s educating in nutritional choice, supporting mental health or being a curator of experiences that become lifetime changes.”
Equipped with all the amenities at a village, the training centres boasts replica, commercial size equipment so employees learn a hands-on approach in terms of safety, quality and operational procedures. This includes a commercial kitchen, crib, accommodation, tavern, café and retail space.
“We have had an incredible response from both Graduates and Clients over the past year since we began training at The Academy,” shares Shelley Roberts. We’re delighted to confirm that due to the success of our Perth Academy, we are taking this WA innovation nation-wide. In addition to our Perth Academy, we will be opening Academies in South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales in the coming year.”
